New!  Social Confidence Group

                           When:  Mondays, 4:00-5:00pm, beginning February 25, 2008

                           Where: Health Center Conference Room

Please call the Counseling Center at ext. 8331 to set up a time to meet with the group leaders prior to the group (it’s best to call the week before the group starts). The meeting will last between 20-30 minutes.

Many students report lacking confidence in social situations. They feel anxious about approaching an individual or a group of people because they worry about starting a conversation. They may also worry that they will say the wrong thing or don’t know what to say after the initial hello. The result can be someone who very much wants to make new friends and connect with other people but ends up avoiding social situations.

The Social Confidence group is meant to help students develop and practice the skills needed to be more confident in social situations.

Do I have to meet with the group leaders before the group?  Yes.

We ask all students interested in the group to meet with the group leaders ahead of time.  We do this because we want to give more information about the group so a student can decide if it’s right for them. Some students may decide the group doesn’t actually meet their needs, and we will talk with them about other options.

Do I have to go to every group meeting?  Yes.

Your success and the success of the others depends on everyone being present to practice and help each other.

How many group meetings are there?

We will meet starting February 4th for approximately 6 to 8 weeks.

If I’m interested, what do I do?

If you are interested in the group, call the Counseling Center, x8331.  Tell the receptionist you are interested in the Social Confidence Group and ask to set up a time to talk with the group leaders.  Please call ASAP for a meeting time.

Group Leader:   Maggie Ateia, Psy.D.  Counseling Center Psychologist
