In addition to individual counseling the counseling, center also offers groups, outreach and consultation.
Groups: New! Social Confidence Group When: Mondays, 4:00-5:00pm, beginning February 25, 2008 Where: Health Center Conference Room Please call the Counseling Center at ext. 8331 to set up a time to meet with the group leaders prior to the group (it’s best to call the week before the group starts). The meeting will last between 20-30 minutes. Many students report lacking confidence in social situations. They feel anxious about approaching an individual or a group of people because they worry about starting a conversation. They may also worry that they will say the wrong thing or don’t know what to say after the initial hello. The result can be someone who very much wants to make new friends and connect with other people but ends up avoiding social situations. The Social Confidence group is meant to help students develop and practice the skills needed to be more confident in social situations. Do I have to meet with the group leaders before the group? Yes. We ask all students interested in the group to meet with the group leaders ahead of time. We do this because we want to give more information about the group so a student can decide if it’s right for them. Some students may decide the group doesn’t actually meet their needs, and we will talk with them about other options. Do I have to go to every group meeting? Yes. Your success and the success of the others depends on everyone being present to practice and help each other. How many group meetings are there? We will meet starting February 4th, for approximately 6 to 8 weeks. If I’m interested, what do I do? If you are interested in the group, call the Counseling Center, x8331. Tell the receptionist you are interested in the Social Confidence Group and ask to set up a time to talk with the group leaders. Please call ASAP for a meeting time. Group Leader: Maggie Ateia, Psy.D. Counseling Center Psychologist
Programs (Workshops/lectures): The Counseling Center offers various programs throughout the year on psychological topics of interest to students. We've offered programs on stress reduction, procrastination, depression, building relationships, cultural adjustment and many other topics. Most often these programs are offered to both graduate and undergraduate students in a central location on campus. We also do programs designed specifically for either grad. students or undergrads. Actually we're happy to do a program for any group that could benefit from one. If you have some ideas on topics for workshops you'd like to see us offer let us know by calling us at x8331 and just leave word with the secretary or ask to talk with one of us. You can also drop us a note to us at: Counseling Center, MC1-8. Consultation: We're always available to meet with students, staff, and faculty if there is concern about a student. Typically, someone calls us because they have noticed a change in the student they are concerned about but aren't sure what to do. We meet or talk over the phone with the person who is concerned and discuss what it is that has them concerned and make suggestions about what can be done. Asking for suggestions doesn't lead to anyone "getting in trouble". What it does lead to is getting helpful suggestions. Every year a number of students, faculty, and staff call or come to the center or call to get this kind of help and we welcome it. Psychiatric consultation: The Counseling Center has a part-time psychiatrist available for medication evaluations.
To see a psychiatrist for the first time with a referral: Please contact the Counseling Center for an appointment to discuss the referral. Together you and the staff psychologist will develop a plan for addressing your concerns. If you are referred to our consulting psychiatrist there is no charge for the service.
