Caltech's Crisis Assessment and Response Team (CAR Team)
As we begin the new academic year, we want to let you know of a service that is available to Caltech faculty, staff and students called the Crisis Assessment and Response Team (CAR Team). The CAR Team assesses the potential for harm that sometimes can arise in a work or college environment and develops a plan of action to respond to the situation. Concerns that are imminent, involving the potential for violence or the emotional well being of individuals on campus, are the kinds of situations to which we respond. While there are no current situations we are concerned about on campus, examples of situations that the CAR Team has dealt with in the past include: threats against co-workers; individuals who come to the attention of co-workers or colleagues as someone who may be suicidal; missing persons; domestic violence; and individuals whose emotional instability causes disruption and concern in the work place. The team is comprised of on campus professionals who have experience in risk assessment/response and include staff of the Caltech Staff and Faculty Consultation Center, Student Counseling Center, and Campus Security. · If you are concerned that someone poses an immediate risk of harm to him/herself or others: Call Campus Security at ext. 5000 · If you are aware of a situation that is developing that may result in violence, threats of violence, or indicates an individual’s well being or emotional stability is in question, or if you are not sure how seriously to take a situation: Call or Email any one of the CAR Team members: Gregg Hendersen, Chief of Campus Security Linda Krippner, Director, Staff and Faculty Consultation
Center Kevin P. Austin, Senior Director for Health and Counseling

Your concern will remain confidential and we will work with you in developing a plan that addresses the situation. Staff, faculty, and students are encouraged to continue to involve their supervisors, department administrators/chairs, advisors or Resident Advisors regarding any situation of concern to them as well.
